The Global Educator, by Julie Lindsay

*Bolded words are questions*

Think about how we build empathy with others.

Through understanding.

How do we build empathy when we meet people in person?

Getting to know this person. Not as just another person, but someone you know, someone human.

How do we build empathy when we meet people virtually?

Learning about their real lives, connecting them to ours.

What do you know and think about the need for empathy?

Humans are territorial. If we don’t know them, they are not an ally. It’s a natural feeling. There are people out there, who are alone and need help, and no one will accept them, or even tell them that they need to change.

How important is it to have empathy in order to be able to collaborate with others?

Humans are social animals, and we build trust through experiences. You can understand situations easier and act accordingly for it.

What strategies are YOU using to build empathy in your cross-classroom, global team?

I like to learn more about the people I’m working with. These are other people, after all. They have lives of their own, lives with love and conflict, wealth and poverty, friends and family.

This is a chance for me to learn more about the outside world, and those who live in it. It would do me good to be at least sociable and respectful..!
