The Global Educator, by Julie Lindsay

When we meet people, we look for what we share in common, we try to empathize, to relate.  When we meet people virtually, the barrier we would face normally face to face, a barrier of assumption. So when we meet virtually we tend to be more open and more empathetic, it can be easier to relate to one another. Empathy is important because it is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Without empathy we couldn't communicate well or feel emotion with others. Empathy is important because it allows humans to be humans. To build empathy in my cross-classroom, global team, I try to show a bit about myself and listen to others. If you try to get to know someone even if it isn't in person, you'll better yourself and the other person. In this project, we don't know each other's personal information, but we will know the person, and share what is personal and what makes us who we are. Without empathy, this isn't possible.
