The Global Educator, by Julie Lindsay

Intro to the Project of A Lifetime

I am Steve and I am from Houston Texas. I am a senior at Spring Woods High. My life is pretty much relaxed, well so far. I’m close to embarking on the college life so maybe that will make it more hectic. Just because my life is pretty calm doesn’t mean I don’t have fun. I have fun everywhere I go. Here in Spring Branch, a suburb in Houston life is cool. It’s very diverse which is good. I’ve lived here in Spring Branch all my life.

Spring Woods High School is the epitome of diversity. And that’s what makes us who we are, unique. Another thing is that if you were new to this school, you would make friends the first hour you’re here. Here, after school I play for the basketball team and we are expecting a very good season. I’ve been playing basketball all my life and realistically speaking, this will be the last year that I play on a competitive level. So it should be an emotional ride. If I’m not on the basketball court, you’ll see me in a meeting with the Junior Achievement Company. Those are the main two hobbies I take part here at Spring Woods. Both require you to interact with many different people so doing this flat-classroom project should be easy for me and fun at the same time.

The flat-classroom project is a new thing for me, but I have a feeling that it will be very fun and interesting. I expect to learn a great amount of things from all over the world. It is going to be fun to learn different things from people my age and from their points of view. We could also possibly become friends. I am very interested in finding out how life is across the globe. Knowing that would make me think about how it would be if I moved to another country.

Working together should also be fun. Now we are all able to put all of our ideas together and make one big great solution to a problem. I see that as a huge advantage. Another advantage is that we are in the year 2008. That means that we have so much access to great technologies. One disadvantage that I see is the language barrier. But like I said, as soon as we get all of our minds together, it’ll be a complete success.

In addition to language, we have other barriers: cultural, time, geography... so many things that we must learn to overcome as we work together. I have found that the students who push through the obstacles, and even the fact that this project teaches so many things, so very quickly (which overwhelms some) -- come out of this project transformed and I hope that you will be one of them.

You certainly have the right attitude for it! Good luck and let me know if I can help.

Welcome to the Flat Classroom project Steve. Just like Spring Woods, you'd love the diversity here. Have fun.
